How Coaching, Psychotherapy, Mentoring and Counselling differ
In essence coaching is about working towards goals. It unlocks a person’s potential to maximise their performance. Coaching helps the client to learn rather than teaching them. It differs to counselling and psychotherapy, in that coaching is about the ‘here and now’ and the future. Counselling usually covers past, present and future and includes elements of distress or psychological disturbance. Psychotherapy is often longer term, dealing with severe disturbances. A Mentor is someone with knowledge and experience in the area the client seeks help.
Code of Ethics
As a professional coach and accredited member of the Association for Coaching, my practice is aligned to the AC Code of Ethics and good practice standards.
My Coaching Approach –How I will work with you
Solutions Focused – I know how confusing and stressful life can be when you don’t have direction, so I use a variety of techniques to breakdown your options, and then start working towards an answer. For new careers and direction, we look at areas of your life that you truly enjoy and are important to you, and investigate options to get you there.
Partnership Working – The most important aspect of coaching is the coach and
client relationship. We build complete trust in one-another, we identify key areas of growth together and we work towards a vision and a goal! Sessions are completely confidential. They are challenging and more often than not they are FUN! You will feel completely supported throughout your journey. The coach brings the agenda and various tools and techniques, while the client brings the content and the coach facilitates the process.
3 Phase Discovery – A system that I feel works really well for people who are seeking new direction.
EXPLORE -First we stop, see where you’re at, what is working, what is not working. We look at your strengths, values and motivators (to change). An understanding will help you to manage change and clarify ambitions to achieve goals.
DISCOVER – We start investigating ideas and options, things that could work for you.
PLAN – Here we make an goals, and break down an action plan into small manageable steps.
This system works very well when you’re not sure what your next step should be.
